As a hopeless wanderer, my greatest struggle is my pocket book.
Traveling is undoubtedly expensive.
My dreams of exploring the world can sometimes seem so far out of reach! But, I know that with a plan and a little determination, we can all wonder at the Temples of Angkor, trek through the Highlands of Scotland, and bask on the sun-kissed beaches of Italy.
Here are some very simple ways of saving money to fund your next awesome adventure!
Eat out as little as possible. Create a weekly meal plan and an itemized grocery list. Do your shopping only once a week and be sure to eat before you go to avoid any yummy temptations. Cook all of your meals and take the leftovers to work the following day. If you love experiencing food as much as I do, you’ll probably be saving $200-300/month.
Rather than spending $4+/day at your local coffee house, invest $15 into a French Press and make your coffee at home. A caffeine-addict like me will be saving $80-100/month.
Cut back on the booze or quit all together. Any bar you step in to will cost you at least $10+ tip. If it’s a club, you’ll double that. I’m just going to avoid doing that math!
Use alternative means of transport whenever possible by cycling everywhere you can. You will save yourself $300+/month on car payments, fuel, auto repairs, and insurance. If you live in a big city like I do, try using public transportation for your longer commutes.
Instead of paying for an over-priced movie ticket, have a girl’s-night-in. Dust off that awesome DVD collection and pick up a cheap bottle of wine or wait a few months to rent that movie you’re dying to see. Regular movie-goers will save around $60/month.
Cancel your Cable subscription and try out Netflix or Hulu. You’ll save yourself around $100/month. Besides, you’ll find that watching less TV gives you time you never knew you had for being creative or making great memories and having wonderful adventures!
Make some extra cash by slimming down your wardrobe. Sort through your clothes and accessories and sell them online. Whenever you go shopping, avoid the department stores and hit up a local fashion recycling boutique or second-hand store. Make a rule for yourself that, if you bring home any item that is new-to-you, you will get rid of at least one similar item. Not surprising to say that you could be saving yourself up to $1000/year.
Live minimally by downsizing your house or apartment to a smaller apartment, studio, or flat. If you’re unable to move, consider bringing in a roommate to split the cost. That’s up to a couple thousand dollars a year back in your pocket or travel fund!
Open a savings account that is strictly for travel. That means, once the money goes into the account you’re not allowed to touch it aside from travel expenses. Trust me! This totally pays off!!
Create goals for yourself, no matter how large or small, they will put your dreams into motion. All of your dedication, strong-will, and effort will get you to your destination. If you find yourself struggling, just remember why you started and how far you’ve come. Don’t give up. Find a way. The struggle is part of the journey.
